Be sensitive to travellers' travails: Minister

Kolkata, April 15 (IANS) Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Monday urged officials and employees of the railways to be sensitive towards common people who use trains, which serve as the "lifeline of India".
"Don't get impatient when common people complain to you. Listen to them carefully and take initiative if you can to solve the problems. If not, try to make them understand, but never misbehave with passengers as railway is the lifeline of India," said Chowdhury, flagging off a new train at the Howrah station.
The minister flagged off the Haldia-Anand Vihar weekly superfast express, which will connect the port town of Haldia to national capital New Delhi. Two other local EMU (electric multiple unit) trains were also flagged off.
The minister announced another weekly superfast express train, which will run from Shalimar in West Bengal to Bhuj in Gujarat, starting April 20.
Chowdhury said that India was one of only four countries which had the capacity to carry 10 billion tonnes of freight per annum.
"We are also trying to increase the capacity of goods trains to 10,000 tonnes," he said.
Chowdhury said there were plans to set up base kitchens at major stations as a step to improve the standard of food.
